Prismacolor and our favorite coloring tools

There are many tools we, the artists, love to use. Some use colored pencils, pastels, paints, I know of an artist who uses makeup as a paint instead of your traditional acrylic or water color. I know of a lot of digital artists who love using certain programs over others. I, personally, prefer Manga Studio over Photoshop. But digital art is not where I started. There are a lot of us who started our time as an artist using only pencils and paper. This is what this post is about. Our favorite coloring tools.

During my 10th to 11th grade years in high school, my Commercial Art teacher had always recommended one particular set of art tools for markers and colored pencils. Prismacolor. Having used the pencils and markers, myself, I have to agree that they were the best art utensils I could have ever used during my time in Commercial Art. Smoother coloring, more professional feel to them, more variety to their colors, including percentage of shades. I would love to get my hands on a full set, again. However, that would cost a lot. Say....several hundred dollars possibly? I don't know how well they work now, but back then, 15 - 17 years ago, great tools for any artist out there.

Also, from my Commercial Art class, we used these multicolored pen sets from Sanford called Expresso. Yes. Expresso. The product, itself, that I have on me, is over 16 years old. The ink in the pens are partially dry and it is really hard to find a replacement set. They do, however, work great for line work, if you have a steady hand, which I barely do. However, they are not meant for long term color so only use them for line work in your drawings.

Right now, after moving to my current town with my husband, my mother-in-law, actually, bought me a couple of art tools. One set is called the Pro Art sketching set. Well, the pencils and charcoal kit. It comes with 8 graphics pencils, 3 charcoal pencils, 1 sketch stick, 2 charcoal sticks, a kneeded eraser (that melted), a plastic rubber eraser (works great), and two sharpeners. One for my charcoal pencils, the other for my normal pencils. It's a nice set. I really like it.

Another set of coloring tools, not really a set, but more for fun, is a set of tricolor colored pencils. They're nothing big, but fun to play with every once in a while when bored. I don't know the exact product, but they have a glitter cast over the multicolored lead.

Finally, she got me these water color pencils, a product of the Faber Castell art tools. Like other colored pencils, they come in varying colors, including your traditionally seen blue, red, green, yellow, orange, and black. Unlike other colored pencils, they are specifically made for watered paint brushes to spread their colors to give a unique look to your drawings. I, personally, don't use them for that, as I lack the proper paper for such a thing, However, they blend with my other colored pencils really well, making for a nice color variant to my colored drawings. Especially since I am stuck using Crayola colored pencils at this time.
I don't mind the Crayola Colored pencils, but they're not meant for long term works. I am aware artists are able to do amazing things with what little art supplies they have. Hell, for the longest time, I only used Crayola colored pencils, a mechanical pencil, and printer paper for a lot of my drawings.

One last product I had received as a gift, but from my husband. No. Not just some cheap coloring kit, though I did get one because of the oil and dry pastels. Chemist got me a 4 piece pigment liner pen set by Staedtler. I haven't had a chance to use them yet, but I will be testing them out in a while. I just need to get my groove back into drawing on paper.

Well, personal experience aside, time for questions.

What coloring tools have you used and how did they work for you?
Have you ever used Prismacolor products before? If so, how did you like them?
Have you ever seen work painted using makeup?
What kind of drawing tablet, for digital art, do you use?
What are your preferred art programs?

Below are images of the products I mentioned in my main blog. I could only find Faber Castell and Prismacolor websites. The others are either on Amazon or at any store with art supplies as a product.
